Closing The Year With Momentum

Be ready for any start line—insights for those who train, lead, and show up under pressure.

Hey Team!

I’m currently in Toronto, sitting in a hotel lobby, and reflecting on what an incredible year it’s been. It’s hard to believe that 2025 is coming to an end in less than 48 hours.

While I’ve been here visiting a close group of friends, I found myself scrolling back through photos from the start of the year. One image stopped me. It was taken in the first couple of weeks of January, and what caught me off guard wasn’t how I looked physically, although that’s changed too, but the energy in my eyes.

I looked optimistic, but not fully confident. Hopeful, but unclear. It was a previous version of me. The wild part is that photo is less than twelve months old.

As I kept scrolling, the contrast became obvious. A full year living single in Tofino. Countless trips to New York. Competing in HYROX Pro Division twice. Running alongside nearly 4,000 runners in August and September. Another ultramarathon at Runningman. And maybe most importantly, a year spent looking inward, keeping awareness and personal growth front and center.

Of course I look different. Growth leaves a mark.

Most of it came down to choices. Not just “doing hard things,” but raising my ceiling. Getting comfortable with discomfort. Leaning into friction… those moments when your body quietly says, this feels scary.

I’ve committed to a few big things in the year ahead. But what matters most to me is carrying this momentum forward. The energy. The awareness. The feeling of being fully alive.

This Week’s Shift

As a special end-of-year edition, I want to focus on one thing only: closing this year with intention.

A lot of people are already thinking about 2026, but haven’t taken the time to properly close the chapter they’re standing in. Reflection and celebration aren’t optional. They’re what allow momentum to carry forward instead of reset.

Here’s the simple process I’m using. It takes ten minutes.

First, write down three things from this year that you’re genuinely proud of. Not what looked good online… what actually mattered to you.

Next to each one, write what you did to make it happen. The habits you kept. The decisions you made. The moments that felt uncomfortable but necessary.

Then write the names of the people who helped you along the way. The ones who supported you, challenged you, or simply showed up. Text them. Thank them before the year ends.

That’s it.

This small act does two powerful things. It helps you carry meaningful energy into the new year, and it reminds others that their presence mattered. Quiet acknowledgment goes a long way… for them, and for you.

Close the year well. The next one will meet you where your energy is.

In that vein, thank you for being here, supporting me, and bringing so much positive energy into my life. Every one of you who took the time to read this newsletter added to my momentum.

I’m genuinely excited for you and the year ahead. You know where to find me if you ever need a voice saying, “Be the fuel.”

My mantra: Be the fuel… of inspiration, of support, of hope, of what’s needed most.

Catch you on the Start Line in 2026,
—Matty
